METRO GROUP Helps Fire Victims in Russia

Over 600 large-scale fires, extreme 40oC temperature and vicious smog built up to a real natural disaster for the a large part of Russia’s territory. METRO GROUP sent essential commodities for a total value of €50,000 to regions most affected by fires and smoke.

METRO GROUP's sales divisions: Metro Cash & Carry, Real,-, Media Markt and METRO AG provided relief for Shatura, Orekhovo, Yegorievsk, Lukhovitsy districts where the fire has been at its most violent, as well as for cities and towns that fell victim to malice of the blazes: Lipetsk, Togliatti, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan, and Voronezh.

"METRO GROUP's shopping centers and Logistic Center escaped damage by fire. But we made no doubt that we must give aid in the hour of need. The company has 90 shopping centers in Russia, millions of Russians are our customers, and our stores are a part of their daily life. We are sensible of our responsibility to them and to the society at large", says Mr. Erwin Trinkl, METRO AG Senior Vice-President Public and Government relations in Russia. "It was very important for us to provide support that met the actual needs of people who had found themselves in a tight situation".

Food, blankets, bedclothes, household appliances, clothes – this is but an incomplete list of the commodities provided. Hundreds of pallets sent to the sufferers were put together in a matter of days, taking into account the basic needs of the homeless fire victims, owing to expeditious cooperation with the authorities in each of the regions.

Besides the aid from the sales lines, METRO GROUP organized a collection soliciting donations from shopping center customers. Lots of goods were gathered in the sales areas of real,- stores and also transferred to regional charity distribution centers.

Every customer of REAL,- can make contribution to environment protection now

The problem of environment protection cannot leave anyone indifferent now. Company real,- offers its customers to become participants of the worldwide movement for environment protection. In July of 2010, all hypermarkets real,- transited to environmentally friendly BIO bags instead of the ordinary polyethylene ones.

Do you know that an ordinary polyethylene bag decomposes almost for 150 years and releases various harmful substances? Now the customers of real,- are offered three kinds of paid BIO bags that decompose fully already in two years under influence of natural factors, which results in appearance of water, СО2 and biomass.

According to statistical data of the company, 15 real,- stores used about 7.080 million free polyethylene bags per month on average. In the first test month of use of the paid BIO bags consumption of the bags decreased to 1.035 million units. It is obvious that buyers prefer not to take bags "for reserve" and their attitude to consumption grows more accurate.

The quantity of discarded bags decreased by 6.045 million units per month on average. If we count approximate results from sale of BIO bags per year, it turns out that 72.54 million bags less go to the environment and those 12.43 million bags that will be discarded decompose 98.67% faster.

Buying a paid eco bag at cash terminals of real,- stores every buyer makes his contribution to improvement of environmental and social situation in his city. To understand which needs of a city are the priorities according to its residents, real,- polled buyers in all hypermarkets of the chain in Russia.

Results of the poll have shown that buyers consider such charity projects as development of territories and arrangement of green zones in the city, as well as aid to orphans, elderly people and people with impaired capabilities are the most expedient. Using these data, the company plans to transfer a part of the revenue from sale of the biologically decomposed packaging to the most demanded environmental and social projects in the cities of its presence.

Together we can make this world better!
